On April 27, 2011, a tornado with a maximum EF5 rating struck Smithville, Mississippi, causing extensive damage. The tornado stayed on the ground for 3.3 miles, ruining over 150 homes, destroying Smithville High School, and heavily damaging the town's business district. The twister killed 16 individuals and injured approximately 40 others. Survivors described the hail as being the size of baseballs, and many of them were injured or hurt because of shattered glass and other flying debris.
